Chron Food Team to Start 49 Fights Over Which Restaurants Are ‘Iconic’

Photo: Chron

The Chronicle Food Department announced yesterday that they’re launching something called the 49 Square Miles Tour, in which they’ve gridded out the city into 49 squares and will attempt to choose a single historic or “iconic” restaurant or food business in each. Now, they’ve already started the commenter wars going by admitting that a handful of legitimately iconic restaurants — Delfina, Zuni Café, Slanted Door, and Coi among them — did not get named to represent their squares, saying “they have had an influence that goes well beyond their location.” So, we’re already confused about how this will all work. But look for these features to roll out every Sunday for the next 49 weeks. (You can also cheat and see all the picks listed and mapped here … and what’s this Olympic Club next to Lake Merced?)
