Bauer Thinks San Franciscans Would Tip More If It Weren’t for Healthy S.F. Surcharge

Kick in another dollar, will ya? Stop making us look bad.
Kick in another dollar, will ya? Stop making us look bad.

A major comment storm is afoot over on Bauer’s blog today (731 and counting) after he posted this morning about Zagat’s revelation that San Franciscans are among the worst tippers in the nation, tipping an average of 18.6 percent. Bauer takes the opportunity to complain, once again, about the Healthy S.F. surcharge which he’s tired of seeing tacked onto bills (he’s previously argued that restaurants should quit making a thing of it and just roll it into the prices of food, something that also made his commenters go wild last summer). He says people might be more inclined to add a percent or two if they didn’t see that surcharge so often. We’d argue this could also just be a case of survey bias among Zagat’s local survey-takers, who took way too long to discover Manresa and who just won’t quit with the accolades for Gary Danko. Maybe it’s just those people who are bad tippers. [Between Meals/Scoop]
