Well, this is sad: While Beyoncé was declaring her pregnancy at the VMAs on Sunday night, her sister Solange was refused entrance at a Miami Beach nightclub because her date for the evening was … an inflatable banana. Wait, what?
According to TMZ, not-Beyoncé attempted to enter Miami Beach’s Club Cameo but was turned away because she was carrying a giant inflatable banana. Knowles, however, complained that she was denied for racial reasons. At this point, she became “unruly” with off-duty officers, who “took her across the street to try and calm her down.” Knowles claims that they then pulled a blade on her banana.
Meanwhile, according to the Miami Herald, “Police said they did not take the banana into custody, and it is still unclear why Knowles was club-hopping with the fake fruit.” The issue is currently under investigation.
In the aftermath, Knowles appealed to the masses on Twitter, raging that “I could have left quietly, but I am sick & tired of this scenario being played over & over again … It is time to do something about it. I am a mother raising a young black child in America. Im going to die trying!”
Thank you, Solange, for spotlighting an injustice that we’ve long decried: Thousands of people carrying life-size banana balloons are turned away weekend after weekend at nightclubs across America. It’s simply unfair. Almost as unfair as being Beyoncé’s younger sister.
