S.F.-Bred Burritos Better Than New York’s, and Possibly Our Pizza Too

Today in NYC vs. S.F. rivalry news: The New York Post makes note of three California-based chains that have invaded NYC in recent months: 900 Degrees, the West Village pizzeria opened by San Francisco’s Tony Gemignani; Dos Toros, the fledgling taqueria chain started by two Bay Area–born brothers; and L.A.’s Sprinkles Cupcakes. It’s no surprise that when comparing Dos Toros to Benny’s Burritos, Dos Toros takes the prize — Manhattan has always been a bit of a burrito desert.

But in the pizza comparison, it’s a little mind-blowing that a New York paper would dare call it a draw between a classic New York slice place (Joe’s) and a sauceless, wood-fired pie with gourmet sausage on top (900 Degrees). That is some traitorous talk right there … maybe Alan Richman would care to weigh in?
