A woman in Oak Park, Michigan, who used the front yard of her house to plant four organic vegetable beds, is facing misdemeanor charges and 93 days in jail for not complying with city ordinances about the proper use of a front yard. Apparently, gardener Julie Bass’s vegetables didn’t count as “suitable, live, plant material,” which is required in a front yard by Oak Park law. As Bass told a local TV reporter, “We thought it’d be really cool to do it so the neighbors could see. The kids love it. The kids from the neighborhood all come and help.” So there were kids involved? Being encouraged to garden? We think the red phone in Alice Waters’s equivalent of the Bat Cave just started ringing. We’ve got video of the whole sordid tale, straight ahead.
