If last weekend’s Vendy Awards taught us anything, it was that there’s a giant collective appetite for Philly’s growing fleet of homegrown food trucks. So, its feels kind of like a slap in the face when on the heels of our first celebration of mobile munchies, word comes that Oscar Mayer is rolling up on Penn Square at 15th and Market next Wednesday, July 20, with its Wienermobile. Sure it’s cute, in a sort of kitschy and phallic sense, but what it represents — let’s call it Big Food — is the antithesis of what’s driving our food truck fascination. But for a city that seems to be foaming at the mouth right now for hot dogs, it’s not all bad. The truck will be giving out free hot dogs, and hometown tubed meats aficionado Hawk Krall will be onboard to sling some special wieners that will feature his preferred toppings combinations.
