Here’s the deal with Taste of Chicago: It’s big, loud, and crowded. Some love the chaos and the excitement; others consider it a version of hell on earth. Luckily, there is another option if you’d like to avoid the worst of the crowds, yet still want to sample some of the vendors. A mini preview of Taste of Chicago is taking place today at Daley Plaza from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nine vendors will be there dishing out small plates — each one costing no more than $3. The weather will undoubtedly be brutal, but we are excited about a few of these vendors.

If you can only check out one stand, we recommend Lao Sze Chuan, which is one of the most critically acclaimed Chinese restaurants in town. Hopefully, they can make the transition from cooking in a restaurant kitchen to feeding the hungry crowds in a mobile unit. Also, we never exactly need an excuse to hit up Manny’s. Other vendors include Robinson’s #1 Ribs, Connie’s Pizza, Beggar’s Pizza, Polo Cafe, and Adobo Grill.

Hopefully the tall buildings will shield the crowds from the oppressive sun, as it is expected to get very hot out there. Be careful.
