When the Franklin Mortgage & Investment Co. first opened, it gave Philly some of its first sips of Prohibition-era cocktails since, well, Prohibition. And without leaning too hard on the Baptists and Bootleggers gimmickry, its managed to earn a reputation as one of the country’s best cocktail joints. Everyone from GQ and Esquire to Bon Appetit has gushed over the bar’s regularly changing cocktails lists. To mark its two year anniversary tonight, the Franklin crew is only reaching back as far as 2009. It’s recreating the drinks it served on its opening night. Some of the throwback cocktails being revived include Center City Swizzle, Old Overholt Rye, Amontillado Sherry, ginger syrup, lemon juice and Velevet Falernum; Billy Penn Club, Old Tom Gin, Dolin Dry, lemon juice, apple butter and an egg white; and Main Line Wine, Appleton’s VX Rum, House Claret Cup, lemon juice and simple syrup.
