‘Fear and Loathing’ Pie at Tony’s Contains Neither LSD Nor Other Hallucinogens

Tony’s Pizza Napoletana in North Beach has added a couple of new menu items, including a three-quarter pound meatball topped with a farm egg and burrata, as well as a new pizza called the Fear and Loathing. The name is apparently not a reference to Hunter S. Thompson’s work, since in place of copious magic mushrooms you will find pulled spicy tamarind pork, serrano and habanero pepper, citrus, tomato, fresh cactus salsa, queso fresco, and agave nectar atop the pie. We also heard that Tony Gemignani would be doing “Detroit-style” pizza at his newer coal-fired spot next door, which sounds like it’s just a Sicilian slice with the sauce on top of the cheese.
