It’s a little bit hard to picture, but Alice Waters was once a plucky teenager who slung fried chicken as a carhop at the Country Cousin in Michigan City, Indiana. As Kim Severson recounts in a little Times bit about famous chefs’ former summer jobs, Waters also slung hot dogs one summer for a pair of cute brothers who called themselves Winski & Winski Enterprises. She even admits she tended to be a teenager up to no good in those days: “I definitely was doing things in the nighttime that probably made me not so alert during the day,” she says. We always new she had a baaad side! Also sort of noteworthy: Rachael Ray found her time as a HowardJohnson dishwasher “degrading,” and a preteen Guy Fieri had his own soft-pretzel cart. [NYT]
