Yesterday Grub Street wondered aloud which was bigger news: A hot dog shop opening on South Street, or the fact that the new business was going in along the vacant row of storefronts between 6th and 7th streets. Now there’s word that another vacant property on what was once dubbed the city’s hottest street will be home to another forthcoming restaurant. Naked Philly reports that a new take-out spot is going into the shuttered former Dairy Queen at 514 South St. There’s no word yet on what it will be (we’re crossing out fingers that it’s not another chain), but the owners have applied for a take-out permit and received the go-ahead for interior demolition. While turnover is nothing new for South Street — typically every spring and summer brings a fresh crop of new shops and take-out joints — but the economy’s downhill skid in recent years really took its toll on the strip. So hopefully the news of two imminent restaurants coming to the neighborhood in weeks to come signals recovery for the downtrodden strip. [Naked Philly]
