Tico and Citizen: They’ve Got Eggs, And They Know How to Use ‘Em

On Sunday, both Citizen Public and Tico opened for brunch. Both are incredibly of-the-moment restaurants. And both menus flaunt an unabashed love affair with the egg in its many forms — this, despite recent critical rumblings that eggs have had their time in the sun.

Now, we know what you’re thinking: These are brunch menus! Eggs and brunch go together like hangovers and brunch! True enough. However, these dishes aren’t your ordinary scrambled, fried, poached-n-Benedict’d variety. At both Citizen and Tico, eggs are yolked beyond their comfort zones into permutations previously untasted. And they look darn good!

Citizen’s brunch roster is decidedly egg-centric. Here, you’ll find Lobster Benedict (poached eggs atop brioche); Eggs Sardou (poached eggs with artichoke and Hollandaise); Three Eggs Scrambled (needs no explanation); and a Crispy Ham-Wrapped Scotch Egg (complete with a “creamy yolk center.”) There’s also a breakfast pizza topped with salmon, bacon — and a quail egg, if you please.

Over at Tico, there’s a Spicy Duck Confit and Green Chile Hash, complemented by two poached eggs. A Griddled Serrano Ham and Manchego Cheese sandwich is stuffed with two fried eggs. And then there’s a Grilled Skirt Steak … accompanied by poached eggs. Those not in a brunch mindset might consider ordering the Bacon Cheese Burger. But note that you can add a fried egg. They won’t even charge you! Don’t hold back, they’re saying. Unburden yourself. Throw caution to the wind, and to your meat patty. Add the damn egg. It’s free.

We just might.
