Talk about ending with a bang. A little over a week after Michael Fiorello took home the grand prize at Cochon 555, a press release was sent out that declared that he was leaving Mercat a la Planxa to become the culinary director for Garces Restaurant Group in Philadelphia. Iron Chef Jose Garces is the executive chef of the respected tapas joint in the Blackstone Hotel, but has a much bigger empire in Philadelphia. So while it’s sad to see such a talent go, it’s certainly a step up. Corry Morris, who has been with the restaurant since 2008, will be promoted to Chef de Cuisine starting in May.
