First Look Into Oliver’s Cafe, Soft-Open in Redondo Beach

David Linville, the former executive chef at Charlies in Malibu and The Standard Hollywood, is now cooking at Oliver’s Cafe, which soft-opened two weeks ago in Redondo and is set to grand-open in about a month. Named for the owner’s grandson, the restaurant serves produce-forward steakhouse fare and American cuisine with a slight Anglophile bent, in a big space that looks like it could be nestled in Solvang with its heavy wood elements, over-sized nutcracker, and upright booths. The menu, as you can see below, offers market-driven soups like tomato with pistachio pesto and Londonderry beef stew, salads, and pasta dishes, along with appetizers like a Scotch egg wrapped in sausage, fried artichokes with lemon mayo, and “stinky” Russet fries with blue cheese and truffle oil. What else?

There are also seafood selections like a Boddingtons-battered fish and chips and loup de mer with forged mushrooms, plus steaks and land dishes including a thirteen-dollar burger, fried chicken, and stout-glazed beef ribs. The food appears original, fresh, and kind of fun. We’re not yet fearful that all of our chefs are running for the quieter climes of The South Bay, but so far, the ones who are appear to be refreshing the region’s dining scene.
