Cha-Ya In the Mission Doomed?

The savvy among you should know by now that a “temporarily closed for renovations” sign is never good in the restaurant world, and about 80% of cases lead to months passing and that sign becoming a mockery of itself until everyone accepts that the place is just closed, for good. Now we get word from The Feast that after closing their other S.F. location in December ‘09, vegetarian sushi restaurant Cha-Ya (762 Valencia) is closed “indefinitely” for renovations. It could be a health department issue, as was the case at Saigon Sandwich, which recently reopened and all is well with the world. Or it could be a Pudong situation, where the sign went up in a moment of optimism, but really, no one ever expects the place to reopen. Time will tell, but as of now someone at Cha-Ya’s Berkeley outpost isn’t giving any dates for a reopening. [Feast]
