Here’s a nice surprise for fans of Mexican food in the Gold Coast: Cantina 46 is set to open on May 12 in a “136-year-old pre-Victorian brownstone” which used to house Salute Wine Bar. As first reported by Eater, Chef Servando Camargo is planning to serve “vibrant, authentic gourmet Mexican cuisine with a modern twist,” which is apparently based on his childhood in Mexico. While the full menu has not been released, the restaurant is promising red snapper ceviche, grilled shrimp empanadas and slow-cooked shortrib nachos. Sounds good to us. Interestingly, the restaurant is making a big deal out of the fact that there will be “NO fryers and NO freezers,” on the premises. But don’t worry about the tequila. Waiters will actually carry bottles of it in holsters on their belts, so you’ll have no problem getting a margarita.
