If you’ve been hording cupcakes in shame and secrecy, here’s your chance to indulge your desires out in the open at last. Yes, cupcakes have suffered a bit of an identity crisis lately. Some cynics say they’re “over.” Other wags have suggested they might be the new “pie” or “bacon.” Regardless, tonight those who love cupcakes can rise above the confusion and sugar-rush like it’s 2007 at the Somerville Armory’s CupcakeCamp. More ahead.

CupcakeCamp—and we’re not making this up—”was established as an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and eat cupcakes in an open environment.” As opposed to licking frosting off one’s meaty paws in the privacy of a gloomy basement.

The national “camp” lures cupcake lovers and cupcake bakers; more than 800 people are expected at the Boston event tonight. It happens from 7 until 9:30 p.m. at Somerville’s Center for the Arts at the Armory. Feast alongside like-minded gluttons and enjoy selections from noted spots like Petsi, Sweet, and Treat, and sample amateur bakers’ wares. (Find the full line-up and more info here.) Admission is free, though a $5 donation is suggested and will benefit Brookline-based food charity Lovin’ Spoonfuls.
