Yes, People Camped Out All Weekend Just for a Food Truck Permit

You may have heard about this stuff called street food? And, like, everybody’s really into it and the blogs and twitters are all abuzz with the launch of every new truck? Well, S.F.’s Supervisors let it be known from the mountaintops that new food truck permits were going to become cheaper and easier to get, but then the Public Works department said, Oh, but we’re only going to hand out a few of them at 8 a.m. Monday morning. For a cool $3,000 and a simple annual renewal, food trucks could lock down their very own spot somewhere in town, and for this over a dozen people camped out in the wind and rain this weekend, with the first fellow in line arriving at 4:30 a.m. on Friday.

Watch ABC 7’s rather puzzled coverage of the phenomenon, because they, too, apparently just heard about this food truck business like last month. We’re unclear about how many permits were issued today, but expect some new trucks on the scene tout de suite.
