Tyler Florence to Give the Bay Area a Third Restaurant, El Paseo, Next Week

The local Tyler Florence empire is nearly complete as we get word today that Tuesday, March 15 (give or take) is the opening date for El Paseo in Mill Valley. (If you’re counting, this makes three restaurants, with Wayfare Tavern and Rotisserie & Wine, as well as two kitchen shops.) We first heard about the project about a year and a half ago, and as recently as November Tyler’s business partner Sammy Hagar was proclaiming it would be “the best friggin’ restaurant in Marin County.” Well here it comes, ladies and gents, and Tablehopper brings us a preview of things to come, after she snagged an invite to Tyler’s 40th birthday party over the weekend, which also served as a friends-and-family preview of sorts. (Poor guy was on the line on his own birthday…)

The story is straight-up steakhouse, with some flourishes. The meat will be 38-day dry-aged, in a variety of cuts, and Tyler prefers the marbling in the meat of Holstein cows to the traditional Angus. The chef de cuisine is Preston Clark, previously of Jean-Georges in NYC. No word on whether the entire menu is hyper-local as Tyler originally intended, with “everything except pepper and wine” sourced from Marin County.

And as Lady Tablehopper reports, regarding the design, “The restaurant has a warm, bohemian atmosphere, from the more-masculine front room with leather booths with tufted backs, to a back room featuring eclectic artwork hung salon-style… The bathrooms were simply fantastic, with walls covered with pages of books, and “book” shelves (the ladies room had Peyton Place).”

The restaurant actually has a long history in Mill Valley, having been remodeled in the late 1940s by Edna Foster, a retired schoolteacher who first opened the complex of buildings in the 1930s after traveling in Spain, modeling them after things she saw there. In its most recent incarnation, the restaurant earned a Michelin star before closing in 2009.
