We knew it was going to happen, and maybe now it really is time for Ronald to retire. Despite its boasts of “Billions and Billions Served,” McDonald’s just took a backseat to Subway, which is now the world’s largest fast-food chain. According to recent filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Subway has as many as 1,012 more outlets than Mickey D’s. How’d they do it? By shoving a Subway into every imaginable nook and cranny on the planet: Subway currently slings its Footlongs in places as varied as a church in Buffalo and an appliance store in Brazil. We’re sure Mickey D’s is crying all the way to the bank — the company still reported $24 billion in revenue last year. Our only question: How long before America’s next great restaurant takes over?
