Au Revoir, France: U.S. Now Leads the World in Overall Wine Consumption

Bloomberg is reporting that a wine-industry consulting firm in California is saying the U.S. has outpaced France (and all other wine-drinking nations) as the world’s largest wine consumer for the first time. Ooh la-la! Granted, population plays a big role in tipping the tippling scales — we have five times as many gullets to fill as France — but there is also a growing interest in wine culture among Americans in their twenties and thirties. France still rules when it comes to per capita consumption, with an average of 14 gallons of wine guzzled per person per year (as opposed to 2.6 gallons put away by Americans), but we’re sure that’s only because we have so much other awesome stuff to drink here, too. We’d advise France to console itself in this loss with a nice glass of wine, but we’re too busy drinking it all. [Bloomberg]
