Just how hopeless is Gov. Tom Corbett’s mission to sell off the LCB’s liquor stores? Yesterday the Republican lawman, who campaigned on getting the state out of the booze business because it’s not a “core function” of government, turned to an outside consultant — no less, one hired by his predecessor Ed Rendell — to conduct a study of the state’s 620 liquor stores, the Inquirer reports. The study will focus on the impact privatization will have on the 78-year-old liquor store system and state’s gaping deficit hole. On the surface, gathering the facts and making an informed decision seems like a pretty good idea. But it also sends the message to voters that Corbett and co. are clueless in this quest and clearly in over their heads. Also it’s worth noting that like dispensing liquor at grossly inflated prices, conducting studies is most likely not a core function of our government. We would suggest leaving the research work to the state’s universities, but Corbett’s budget cuts call for killing their funding. [Inquirer]
