Old City’s ‘Last Cool Bar’ Closes

In sad news, Society Hill Hotel, the corner bar at Third and Chestnut streets whose former bartender Bob Bannon told Grub Street in June was the last cool bar in Old City, has closed. The Insider reports the 10-year-old establishment shut down over the weekend, and that its license expired months ago. With the neighborhood’s last bastion of cool gone — or at very least closed for what will surely be a lengthy stretch — will a new safe haven open up for those displaced by the bar’s abrupt closing (we’re looking your way Khyber), or is Old City damned to an eternity of “out-of-town doucheosie dipped in hair gel, doused in booze and itching for a fight or even a gun battle?” [Insider]
