Some early word is in on the potentially cute but arguably gimmicky Straw, via an unofficial review on SFoodie yesterday, and it’s not so hot! Regarding the decor: “We felt like rubes who’d paid two bits for the Haunted Funhouse, only to find a high school gym tricked out with streamers and a smoke machine.” Regarding the food: “Truffle popcorn was underwarm and undertruffled… And crab beignets… had only the faintest hint of crab squirreled away between heavy layers of fried dough.” Similarly the sandwiches are said to be less exciting than a Tilt-a-Whirl, but the Niman Ranch burger served on a Krispy Kreme donut bun “was one decent item among a dozen fails.”
Granted, you should take this as just one man’s opinion (Aaron Hirsch, and his friends’ opinions) based on one meal, but there are some similar thoughts cropping up on Yelp.
