After mourning the loss of Chinatown’s $1 jumbo dog, it’s only fair we reassure you that dollar grub is still alive and well in the ‘hood. The bubble tea joint that used to be Mr. Tea is now Five Loaves and Two Fish Food Court, and, in addition to all the Chinatown bakery staples, it sells $4.75 noodle soups (oxtail, lamb, chicken, and spare ribs), $2.25 sandwiches (ham, bacon, and fried chicken), and $1 skewers of chicken and shrimp. But most, er, miraculous, given our soft spot for crab Rangoon, is the bag of four sweet, cheesy, piping hot fried wontons that goes for $1 even.
