CB3 Is ‘Racist’ Against Douchebags But Welcomes Off the Wagon Owners to LES

Well, this is a sign of where the Lower East Side is headed. While Max Fish disappears from Ludlow Street, Community Board 3’s licensing committee has voted in favor of alcohol for a new project in the Epicerie Café Charbon space, from the owners of such fine establishments as Off the Wagon, Jake’s Dilemma, Gin Mill, and the 13th Step. They’ll be serving till 4 a.m., according to EV Grieve. That site also reports that the owners of La Vie (in the former Boucarou space) were grilled for 45 minutes by neighbors who accused them of operating a nightclub under the guise of a restaurant. When the committee voted against recommending a renewal of license despite the $100,000 that owner Mohamed Elsayed and his partners say they’ve spent on sound-proofing, Elsayed said, “Your mind was made up before we got here” and made accusations of racism. Cracked one committee member, “If douchebags are a race, then I’m a racist.” So much for toning down the rhetoric!
