In yesterday’s New York Times, wine guy Eric Asimov, along with drinking buds Florence Fabricant and Brooklyn Brewery’s Garrett Oliver, tackled the baffling subject of dunkel-style beers. Of particular note to Philly’s always thirsty drinkerati was the inclusion of Sly Fox’s Dunkel. Though the panel dinged the Phoenixville-brewed beer because it didn’t necessarily meet the true dunkel criteria and was closer to a Vienna lager than the style in question. Still there’s something to be said for the fact that the seasonal brew, which was one of only seven American-brewed beers among the 20 examples tasted, made the top 10.
And if that’s not enough good sudsy news for fans of local beers, Victory’s Yakima Glory, the dark-roasted malt and hoppy concoction that the brewery dubs a dark IPA, earned a place on Eater’s Top Ten Beers From 2010 You Should Drink in 2011.
