Many news outlets have quoted Barbra Streisand quipping last night that the reason she was invited to the State dinner honoring the Chinese President was, “I worked in a Chinese restaurant.” Many have thought she was just being her old Funny Girl self. But it’s true! We did some quick checking and found something avid Barbra fans likely already knew: When she was a teenager, Babs had a part-time job as a cashier at Choy’s Orient in Brooklyn. According to The Barbra Streisand Scrapbook, “She credits [owner] Muriel Choy with teaching her many things, including the facts of life.” So let the record show, were it not for a stint in a Chinese restaurant, Babs may never have figured out sex.
