Matt Baume, writing for that BarTab insert in the Bay Area Reporter, notes after surveying a range of gay bars in S.F. considered to be “dives,” that “their one common trait is an inclusive atmosphere that invites all comers and asks nothing in return.” He goes on to give some history and status updates regarding inner-city mainstays like The Gangway, Deco Lounge, Aunt Charlie’s — which hearken back to a time when Polk Street was the gay ghetto — and Trax in the Haight.
