Stix and Straws, which opened late last month in El Segundo, will basically do anything you want them to do with their selection of bamboo skewers, which are arranged by mix-and-match protein and flavor. Take an impaled cut of beef, pork, chicken, shrimp, or veggie and give it a Mexican-style treatment with a “Rio Grande” chipotle and cilantro sauce, or a Japanese “Samurai” coat of soy and ginger, and on and on, veering from Indian to BBQ to Hawaiian and Greek. Or wait, what? You want that as a sandwich? Sure, they’ll do that too, using the same set-up of flavors and sauces (with extra toppings like avocado or bacon for just 50 cents). As for the straws, there’s a similarly broad set-up, with your choice of fruit and a boost, along with tropical lemonade slushies, iced tea in flavors like blood orange and caramel, and signature super smoothies. For dessert, there’s fried cheesecake, on a stick of course, among the options. The space is nearly as cute as its icon, a wee porcupine donning regional costumes that are as stereotypical as the names of the sauces, but adorable nonetheless. We could see this easily accessible menu of shahslik turning into a chain someday, but for now, check out the food menu and our slide show of the space below.
