The Oakland Zoo, which is the only local zoo with elephants (San Francisco has a citywide ban), annually gets a few truckloads of surplus pumpkins at this time of year from pumpkin patches around the Bay Area. As the Chron reports, the elephants are huge fans. “They charged the field with that ‘get-out-of-my-way’ kind of gusto usually seen only at ice cream giveaways.” 30-year-old African elephant Donna was the pig of the group, stuffing whole three-foot-wide pumpkins in her mouth in seconds. Also of note to animal feeding enthusiasts, the zoo’s resident wild turkeys “love to pick through [the elephants’] feces to get the seeds.” [Chron]
