Sushi and pastries made of vegetables: two tastes that, great together or not, are uniting at Shikibu, opening in two weeks in Culver City. The vision of Thomas and Sophia Kato, who consider themselves specialists of sweets made with organic fruits, veggies, and other natural ingredients, Shikibu has your health foremost on its mind. This means all the sushi will be made with organic brown rice, which the restaurant promises/threatens on its window “works wonders against your body but little by little.” Huh? But the most eye-grabbing additions on the menu here appear to be strange mash-ups of produce and pastry. What will be served to the sweet-toothed here?
There’s a banana chocolate cake made with bell peppers, sugar snap profiteroles, cherry and radish cupcakes, and a chocolate cupcake made with asparagus and banana, which sounds a little like Elvis moving to California and attempting a health-kick. Who knows exactly what the market is for vegetable-laced sweets? One thing is for certain, this stands out as one of the most unique confectionery concepts to hit our streets in a while, so we’ll have to give it a try before demanding that our health food and our junk food be separated. See Shikibu’s pastry menu online and look for an opening in early December.
