Have you gathered that there’s, like, an actual food scene happening in San Mateo this year? With the openings of Tim Luym’s The Attic and Chanen Kamen’s Osteria Coppa — not to mention Ramen Dojo — there’s kind of a lot happening down south. Now, on Friday, chef Sachin Chopra brings All Spice to an old Victorian at 1602 El Camino Real. The former Sakoon chef will be mixing Indian spices and techniques with local ingredients and European techniques as well. “I want to demystify spices for diners and introduce them to less popular ones, not just from India, but from all over the East”, says Chopra. Some dishes on the opening menu include star anise and fennel confit chicken wings ($9), smoked lavender and cumin scallops ($11), and shortribs vindaloo ($18).
