A Look Into The Varsity, Open Today, No Wedgies Required

A new sports bar, restaurant, and lounge named The Varsity opens in Mid-City today. The name totally gives us flashbacks of wedgies past, but the large space is pretty sleek, not what we’d feared: a jock-fest for those who find Big Wang’s too subtle. This looks a little like The Viceroy installed a sports bar, including two roll-down display screens, a zillion supplementary flat-screens, black leather booths, high-grade scotch, draft brews, and a classic collection of sports equipment from days past. The menu goes all over the place, offering six burgers, a wrap named for Craig Robinson, wings and nachos beside blackened scallops and mojito chicken skewers for apps, chicken marsala, kung pao chicken, fish ‘n chips, pasta plates, weekend breakfast, and cheese cake for dessert. If you can’t avoid being dragged to watch the game, The Varsity might offer more tasteful conditions than ESPN Sports Zone and a bigger range of chow choices. Check out our slide show of The Varsity, open for happy hour and eventually The Lakers’ game, today at 4:00 P.M.
