Reopenings

Sushi Roku West Hollywood Returns This Friday

Sushi Roku will reopen this Friday on Third Street, following two months of renovation on its interior, uniforms, and menus. No longer will it bear the dark and moody Boa look, striving instead for more organic-looking elements like floors of dark walnut, a 3-D bonsai tree made specifically for the restaurant by guitar-pimper Stephen McSwain, roped ceilings, and a green “living” wall on the outdoor patio. The bar area has been expanded to have its own lounge, which includes a new menu and happy hour eats. And what newfangled, studiously-engineered hot spot would be complete with some variation on today’s trendy tacos?

New menu features include albacore tacos, along with additions like salmon sashimi carpaccio with shaved tableside black truffles, toro tartare on Japanese eggplant, and Kobe meatball lettuce cups. A press release again credits Roku, which opened here in 1997, for “launching Los Angeles’ love affair with sushi,” thereby dishonoring OGs like Kawafuku, The Morishita Family, Tokyo Kaikan, and Osho. Grumble, grumble…
