For months the rumor mill’s been churning with reports of Sulimay’s Restaurant’s imminent sale. Back in July, the word was that the longtime Fishtown fixture, which is home to one of Philly’s most affordable breakfasts and the trio of unlikely rock critics responsible for the viral web hit Breakfast at Sulimays, was going to become an extension of the Sabrina’s family of restaurants. Not so, says Fishtown Star’s Brian Rademaekers. It turns out that Sulimay’s owner Lucretia Sulimay, who’s been battling cancer, is indeed looking for a buyer, but so far none have come forward with an acceptable offer.
Sulimay, who raised a few eyebrows in the neighborhood by serving her “exotic” frittata when she first opened eight years ago, says that a viable candidate for her restaurant will have to serve dinner and a more sophisticated bill of fare to compete with the growing number of restaurants that have opened in the neighborhood in recent years, including Johnny Brenda’s, Kraftwork and Mike Stollenwerk’s forthcoming Fathom Fish House.
