Michael’s, the legendary restaurant owned by California cuisine pioneer Michael McCarty, will match its seasonally driven food with explorations of the (also legendary) Santa Monica Farmers Market. Held once a month on Wednesdays, “Michael’s Market Meet-Ups” will invite guests to the restaurant to hear McCarty and executive chef Mikey Stern detail a specific market ingredient over cappuccino and pastries. The chefs will prepare a few dishes using the featured ingredient, before Stern takes the group on a tour of the market, offering tips on where to go and what’s in season, and meeting some of the chef’s favorite farmers, which may or may not include that irate lady from See Canyon who shamed us in public for loving Mark Peel a little too much. Anyway, what veggie will be featured during the inaugural market meet-up?
This Wednesday at 8:30 A.M., Michael and Mike will explore their love of kabocha squash. The duo will prepare kabocha ravioli with lemon brown butter, pomegranate and hazelnuts, as well as brown butter kabocha purée with wild mushrooms, grilled quail, and thyme, which will then be eaten by the gathering, along with paired wines. Chef McCarty will join the first farmer’s market tour, as well as the next one on November 10th, while subsequent meet-ups will be lead by Stern, with the possibility McCarty will go as well.
A $60 reservation price grants access to the cooking demo, tastings with wine pairings, market tour, pastries and cappucinos, and a copy of McCarty’s most recent book, Welcome to Michael’s: Great Food, Great People, Great Party!.
