India Sweets & Spices Reincarnated In Culver City With New Look

West Venice Blvd. has no lack of solid Indian stops, from the Kerala cuisine on the menu of Mayura to the rotating selection of Mughal curries at newcomer neighbor Bawarchi to the Paul Bhalla apprentice who runs Lawrence of India and the crisp tandoori chicken at Hurry Curry. One of the most popular is India Sweets and Spices, which is rather surprising, given that they’ll give you a palak paneer that lacks paneer and a jackfruit curry vastly inferior to Bawarchi’s. But what’s new here?

Up until now, the restaurant and market had a spray-painted cloth sheet serving as its sign, undeniably marking it as a hole-in-the-wall. But the restaurant has a brand new look, replacing its lean-to-style exterior with white walls and clear plastic signage. Not related to the city-wide chain of a similar name, there is one reason we go back to this Sweets and Spices: the paper thin masala dosa. No doubt its new look should draw in a new division of customers, giving a little more confidence in its appearance. We’d remind them not to stray far from this Southern Indian specialty.
