A new Border Grill will open this weekend in the former Downtown home of Ciudad. Executive Chef Jaime Covarrubias, formerly of Ciudad and Border Grill Las Vegas, will back Mary Sue and Susan in running the kitchen. The trio promise cocktails and food items unique to this location, such as a three-cheese chicken adobo quesadilla, Negro Modelo-braised short ribs, beer battered fish tacos, Baja ceviche, and avocado tacos with red quinoa. Though the aesthetic will touch upon the flagship’s funky traditional art, London muralists were apparently flown in to help decorate the place. Unless these geezers’ names happen to be London Police or Banksy, it’s hard to imagine why the owners would leave out L.A. or Mexico’s massive trove of muralists and artists on this job. Hopefully, the food itself veers closer to our streets. Find out Saturday.
