You can accuse Joey Vento of a lot of things - like racist, xenophobe and right wing rabble-rouser, which he gets all the time - and it’s likely that it won’t faze him. Question the quality of beef that he and his cheesesteak slingers use at Geno’s and you’ve got yourself a battle. Jose Oviedo found this out the hard way, according to Dan Gross. He was punched out by Geno’s employees and hauled off to jail in dust-up over the beef used at the cheesesteak landmark. While walking past Geno’s in the wee hours of yesterday morning, Oviedo noticed workers unloading boxes of meat reportedly labeled from Uruguay and dated November 2009. Moments after asking the workers why they were using frozen beef, Oviedo was stopped by police and questioned about harassing Vento’s employees.
Still fuming from what he perceived as persecution and the police sticking up for Vento, hours later Oviedo passed Geno’s again and scratched the Clown Prince of Cheez Whiz’s Escalade. It was an act that Oviedo acknowledged as “a stupid thing.” Following a smackdown at the hands of Vento’s employees, Oviedo was taken into custody and charged with a summary offense of criminal mischief. He was fined and sentenced to community service yesterday afternoon. Whether his community service will include picking up used cheesesteak wrappers that litter the streets surrounding Geno’s has not been confirmed. [Philly Gossip]
