Hop Angel Brauhaus, Grey Lodge Pub owner Mike “Scoats” Scotese’s Germanic pub and restaurant taking shape at the former Blue Ox Bistro in Fox Chase, was originally shooting for an opening this past spring. It’s now on track for early September, according to its owner. The space has undergone light renovations - mostly in the form of sanding, stripping and cleaning - and received a new tap system. “We didn’t do anything major,” Scotese told Grub Street. “We’re cleaning it up and making it feel more welcoming. The space was little dirty, dark and kind of dingy.”

In recent days, Scotese has been working on a logo for Hop Angel (a rough rendering is posted above) and formulating a menu with Matthew Hartnett, the Brauhaus’ newly appointed chef. Hartnett last worked at Slate in Center City. At Hop Angel he will turn out a wide selection of traditional German and German-inspired dishes, including Weiner schnitzel, Kasespatzle, a variety of different sausages and open face sandwiches. When it opens, Hop Angel wil have some outdoor seating, but the space, which is currently covered in blacktop will be transformed into a Biergarten by next spring.
