First Look Into Papa’s Place, Now Open in Los Feliz

Papa’s Place soft-opened this past Saturday in the former Hillhurst home of Golden Needle Tailoring. Founded and operated by the sons of Golden Needle’s dearly departed owner, the tiny deli space is a tribute to both family and culture. A cross-pollination of comfy Turkish and German recipes reflect the Karachua family’s Turkish background and upbringing in Stuttgart, with a generous pinch of Southern California leaking through the additions of avocado and jalapeno. Familiar neighborhood residents popped in and out to sample everything from bratwurst and french fries to shrimp ceviche and roast beef on soft lavosh, all bearing simple, clean, and assured flavors. Elsewhere, a deli case houses traditional Turkish desserts and salads, while chef Cengiz Karachua leaves the door open for inspiration to guide the specials. The restaurant is palpably dear to the owners’ hearts and could become a local lunch favorite for its warm, welcoming attitude and homey recipes. A menu is still in the works, so check out our slide show of the space and food.
