Avec is closed today after a fire that broke out in a grease chute around 12:30 last night. In the process of carrying an ax and hose to the rooftop, firefighter Christopher Wheatley, 31, slipped and fell 35 feet; he was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital a short time later. There’s no official word on when the restaurant will reopen, but the fire was relatively minor and caused no significant damage to the restaurant, so it shouldn’t be too long.
