Jelly’s nightclub, the Latin dance venue that was recently served an eviction notice by the Port of San Francisco after a shooting on the premises left one man dead, is fighting back with a petition and a “protest rumba” planned for this Friday, August 13 outside the Port’s offices on Pier 1. The shooting was the second such incident in the club’s history, as the East Bay Express reports, but club owners are claiming that this eviction “is not about violence or suspected violence, if that were the case the Port would have evicted the Giants when there was shooting at the stadium. No — this is about gentrification and we need your help to stop it!” In the club’s defense, the July shooting occurred during a private event, however trying to suggest that this eviction is part of the Port’s gentrification plans — and not because of a man shot in the head on their dancefloor — is kind of dumb.
