Strangely, after the place has been open for three years and had to go through various inspections, Ike’s Place is now getting word from the Planning Department that they never had a permit to operate a sandwich shop on 16th Street in the first place — only a “retail coffee store.” As the Bay Citizen reports, the city is now fining owner Ike Shehadeh $250 a day as long as he stays open. Given the enormous volume Ike does, this fine won’t make much of an impact, and Ike writes it off as “harassment by the city.” But isn’t it sort of odd that this permit issue came up just a month after those stalled court proceedings? Does one of those angry neighbors upstairs have an in with the city perhaps? In other news, Ike’s Stanford campus location is opening in two weeks.
