Carcinogenic Chicken Claims Return to Cali Courts

Eating at McDonalds, Applebee’s, and Outback Steakhouse could turn ever more unappetizing as the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine wants a collection of California restaurants to carry labels warning that their grilling methods are carcinogenic. In 2008, this gang of medical watchdogs claimed to discover the cancer-causing chemical PhiP in test samples of chicken from various chains and pressed the businesses to provide warning labels in a lawsuit eventually won by the restaurants. The case is now re-emerging after the Second District Court of Appeal ruled in favor of the disclosure, The L.A. Times reports. The final word will likely be held by California’s attorney general, who opposes Prop 65 warning labels on fast food chicken since the state’s own tests indicate “the amount of PhIP wasn’t enough to constitute a public health threat.” Either way, it’s probably still a good idea to approach those McNuggets with caution.
