We’ve noted on two occasions this week how Bauer’s star ratings can seem generous if you read the actual text of the review — his two-and-a-half-star review of the Village Pub in Woodside this week, for example, reads almost as harshly as his one-and-a-half star review of Farmstead, the only difference maybe being the concrete floors. “If it was only the restaurant menu I was judging, awarding stars would be easier,” Bauer writes, but he defends his ratings saying that he has to take into account atmosphere (which he loves at Village Pub), service, value, and consistency of execution. He admits, however, that even his editors questioned the two and a half stars when they read that review.
