It’s truly a shame that the Jersey Shore as a destination has become synonymous with the boorish overly tanned characters that have become the Garden State’s most visible icons since MTV launched its show of the same name. So its really no wonder that Wildwood’s City Commission held off yesterday on voting for an ordinance that if passed would allow bars to stay open and serve alcohol 24 hours a day, as the Press of Atlantic City reports. Weeks ago Wildwood, which has struggled long and hard to escape its reputation as a stronghold of drunken, ill-behaved youngsters, originally considered extending bar hours from 3 a.m. to 4 a.m., until a local club owner floated the idea of ’round the clock bar hours. The proposal gained traction. Some hoped the town’s struggling bars hit by a difficult economy could benefit. But it was ultimately nixed when locals voiced concerns that the ordinance might attract the wrong types of crowds (i.e. Snooki, the Situation, et al.) and potentially scare off families with children.
