What to Eat At Gladstone’s, Now Refreshed

Gone are the peanuts and gone is the skank factor. With generous coats of white paint, Sam Nazarian has upgraded Gladstone’s, the coastal haunt on the PCH that devolved into a local joke after its heyday in the eighties. The new Gladstone’s, which feels more like Cape Cod than Malibu, highlights the expansive front patio that looks out over the surf, possibly the best upgrade here, along with the fresh strawberry-floating dragonberry mojitos. And what about the food?

While SBE seeks props for not serving canned seafood here, it hasn’t exactly resulted in the reinvention of seafood as we know it, but simply means that Gladstone’s output is indeed now dependably fresh. The dishes will not astonish anyone looking for the imagination on display at The Bazaar or XIV, but neither will the assembled families need to wince over limp, over-fried fare. Raw bar selections and fish plates rule, with everything from shrimp cocktails to Alaskan King crab legs available, along with burgers, flatbreads, steaks, salad, and pasta plates, plus steamed Littlenecks, ceviche, mussels marinere, lobster, clam bakes, and two types of chowder. Even if it doesn’t blow you away, it should, for now, end the last two decades of derision and revive some of the reputation of this always packed house.
