Our area farmers have been testing their melons for sweetness, and the first cool, slurpable specimens are rolling into the Union Square Greenmarket this week. Pittstown, New Jersey’s Oak Grove Plantation is growing an icebox variety — yellow on the outside, red-fleshed within — as well as eye-catching orange ones. And, at Norwich Meadows Farm, the early melons are yellow inside and no less delicious for it.
